Happy New Year.

My son was four weeks old when the ball dropped and the century changed. I couldn’t believe that four weeks had passed already, and I couldn’t believe that here I was, age thirty, watching the dawn of a new millennium.

I wasn’t much concerned with the end-of-days doomsayers. There were two types, the religious and the technical. I figured we had more to fear from the latter than the former. After all, the year two thousand was completely arbitrary, and not even true for everyone on earth.

Calendar dates and times are manufactured constructs, not universal truths.

Still, it felt important. Plus, I had a cool tophat and a really nice dress.

I’ve enjoyed 2023 less than I enjoyed 1999, but the end result is the same: the wheel continues to turn. I welcomed it in with pyjamas and slumber, but the calendar changed regardless.

I hope 2024 brings you good things, that you have much peace, joy, and contentment. Thank you for being here. I appreciate you.

  1. We worried about the world exploding due to computers not being able to compute and change the 1 to 2. We’ve survived, but now we’re threatened with internet blackouts. Hmmm… Some things just stay the same… Happy New Year!
