I fell down the disaster-prep YouTube a while back. I have an affection for disaster and apocalyptic movies and books; do enough searches, and YouTube starts suggesting survival videos for your pleasure.
I’m a bit cautious – it’s easy to infect your YouTube algorithm, and it takes an infinity to set it right. I don’t want to be inundated with conspiracy vids, and the line between disaster prep and ‘lizard people are controlling us’ seems pretty fuzzy.
Most of the survival videos assume a disaster that includes the prompt collapse of our infrastructure, which means the tech that endures is likely to be of the manual variety.
Don’t base your hopes of survival on access to AA and D cells.
For my money, the piece of equipment you most want with you as you navigate the new world is a can opener. Hard to deal with hordes of zombies or marauders on an empty stomach, and cans are a misery to stab open. Plus, no one wants to be smacked in the face with one.
You should also look into low-tech inventions that are integral to survival, such as wool socks: survival depends muchly on healthy feet.
