I Always Have Music

I’m not a music snob, any more than I’m a literature snob. I’ve never seen much reason to exclude anything simply because of a category. I dislike things based on individual metrics, not by its inclusion in a genre.

Many people don’t understand about personalizing their dislikes; they’re willing to hate across categories instead.

I’ve a friend who rejects all country music as a matter of course. She won’t listen to it, and definitely won’t take to the floor and dance. She considers the genre less than, and isn’t interested in information that challenges her opinion.

I forbore pointing out that if you can’t dance to a particular kind of music, that’s a failure of personal skill, and not related to genre. I snark a lot in my head, but learned long ago in the interest of peace to keep those kinds of comments under wraps. Surprisingly, people take offense when you tell them the failure is theirs.

I don’t listen to much classical music in my regular rotation, but I get moods, and I choose little else when I play piano. I’ve learned pieces from some more modern composers – Andrew Lloyd Webber and Elton John must have come with extra fingers – but mostly, my piano preferences lie with Bach, Beethoven, and Haydn.

I get my music from TikTok, streaming services, and the radio. With the latter, I spin the dial between pop and alternative rock. I like my Dua Lipa with a side of The Beaches.

Songs I’m Loving Now – this is my “what I’m listening to now” playlist. I’ve others as well – happiness is organization, even with streaming services.

  1. Strange to exclude an entire genre of music, especially now that so many artists are experimenting with different genres. Since we ditched Spotify, I’m relying on getting my new music recs from the cds the library orders in. Which I judge on their covers, I’m ashamed to say. But today I had writing to do, and I was using my laptop, which has different playlists set up to the ones on my desktop. It was a fun change up.

    1. It’s hard not to judge things by their covers. The artist who work on them are worth their weight in gold – much success depends on it.
I like to keep my hand in with physical copies of music as well – I’ve been adding to my cassette collection just in case. I feel like a teen again.

  2. I grew up to be a terrible music snob. My older brothers were like that and mocked me when I listened to pop music, heavy metal and many other popular genres. My friend circle as a young adult was the same way with me leading the charge. Now, after being married for 30 years and raising two kids with diverse musical taste of their own, I probably have as diverse taste as anybody, but my true passion is still the alt/punk music that came out from the 70s -90s. I don’t overlap much with your playlist but I plan to preview some songs looking for some new faves.

    1. One of my favourite things is when my son sends me some music or other he’s found. It’s always interesting, and stuff I’d not have encountered on my own. It’s nice you have that with your kids.

  3. I feel this way about music too. I pretty much love music across genres.

I have a playlist I keep rotating called currently. Just followed you on Spotify! 💜

  4. Some great tunes in that list, and quite the variety!

My hubs and I listen to everything. He likes to listen to his music in an organized fashion (playlists by genre), whereas I love hitting shuffle and being delighted by what comes up next (or not, then hitting skip). He HATES it when I’m in charge of the music. LOL

That said, I’m not a huge fan of old school country and western–the heavy twang grates on my ears; though, I still sing, dance, and listen to country tunes, so I guess I can’t really say I dislike it. Also, I love me some blues–it’s my favorite…and definitely C&W’s cousin.
