Jokes are much more difficult to tell as adults, I feel. Anything can be taken out of context. People are easily offended. BUT – the jokester sometimes joke inappropriately, too.

True. A friend’s partner is that way, as is one of their friends. I often end up leaving. They’re not terribly worried about the line between funny, inappropriate, and nasty.
